Just for shits and giggles, and in terms of using Blender 3D to expand my portfolio, I started to learn how to model human heads. Of course, I’ve done a couple cartoon characters, but never anything that looked like something.

Jonathan Williamson, at Blender Cookie, has a tutorial video on how he likes to model heads. He is a strong teacher and he and his posse are producing quality work. I really appreciate his approach to modeling so I thought I would give it a shot.

First step: get two pictures of a subject straight on and profile. Though I would have preferred staring at a beautiful girl for 7 hours, Mark Mushakian answered the call first and provided his mug for the project!

So I was cruising along with the tutorial, making real good progress in “solid” mode, though the pictures of Mushakian didn’t exactly line up perfectly and his ears are not the same size and I’m dealing with a mirror modifier and on and on, and when I finally applied the “set smooth” and “subsurf modifier”, the meshakian mouth just went haywire. Major issues with meshakian.

After much time spent tweaking vertices (they want me to call them “vertex’s” now) and getting nowhere, I finally decided to axe the mouth – that really screwed up my mojo for the project. So much so that I left meshakian hairless and, depending on your preference, better or worse looking than the real Mushakian.

Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the results, though far from matching the original picture. It’s easy to identify the problem areas on meshakian. Making additional adjustments will take hours and I’m real luke-warm about opening the blend file again.

I learned some valuable lessons here on this project that I can apply to future works, so thanks to Mark and Johnathon! Well worth the time and energy. :)

Cheers
